If you are into the medieval period and all its allures, you should watch out for thrilling medieval classic movies. There’s plenty of them available today, and they come with a lot of clashing swords, chunking metals, and a great deal of soldiers in chainmail. Interesting, right? Well, below is a list of binge-worthy kingdom-themed movies to satiate your ever-growing craving for memorable Saxon adventure.

GAME OF THRONES (9.3/10)

Without a doubt, Game of Thrones, which was created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, is one of the best kingdom movies ever made. The series revolves around nine noble families who are involved in a life-and-death struggle for the ultimate control over the “Iron Throne,” the seat destined for the king/queen of the seven kingdoms. The most noteworthy families are the Starks, including Jon Snow, played by the drop-dead gorgeous Kit Harrington, Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), and Sansa Stark (Sophia Turner), Lannister and Baratheon families.

The eight-season series perfectly illustrates the callousness that people in different positions of power have and the extent of the chaos they are willing to cause to stay at the top. If you are a sucker for matters of women empowerment, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), who is also known as the dragon queen/mother of dragons, will inspire you. Arya and her sister, Sansa, are also pretty remarkable.

VIKINGS (8.6/10)

Vikings also made it on our list of the top four medieval kingdom movies that you can’t miss. It is about the intriguing life of Ragnar Lothbrok, played by the Australian actor Travis Fimmel. He is a great Viking warrior who is also a farmer with exemplary leadership skills, and a burning desire to explore the world and conquer other kingdoms. His wife, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), is beautiful, supportive, and loving. The fact that she is also the greatest shield-maiden earns her the admiration of many other women, including Torvi’s (Georgia Hirst). The latter is the ex-wife to Lagertha’s only son, Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) – who is like Ragnar in a lot of ways, and wife to Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith), Bjorn’s stepbrother with whom they have a son, Ragnar, named after Ubbe’s father.

Vikings is currently in its sixth season, with viewers still immensely saddened by the death of Lagertha, who is now believed to be in Valhalla with the strikingly handsome Ragnar. Theirs is a love that never died even when the two of them welcomed other people in their beds! Who doesn’t want to experience a love like that?

REIGN (7.5/10)

Do young, powerful, and glamorous queens fascinate you? Reign is undoubtedly worth your time. It follows the life of Mary Stuart (Adelaide Kane), the Queen of Scotland, who is determined to rise despite the love scandals, political plots, and heartbreaks she has to survive through in the court. She is engaged to Prince Francis (Toby Regbo) when she is six years old, meaning that she has to marry him, but he dies later on, leaving her a widow.

Sebastian, played by Torrance Coombs, is one of the notable characters in Reign. He is Francis’ stepbrother, who falls in love with Queen Mary, and the two grow pretty close. Even though he still doesn’t end up with her, despite his good looks and charming personality. The role of Prince Francis’ mother, Queen Catherine (Megan Follows) is impossible to ignore. She will do anything to protect Francis from his looming death after he marries Mary, as prophesied by Nostradamus (Rossif Sutherland).

Reign provides four seasons of incredible entertainment for lovers of medieval classic movies, no wonder it won the 2014 People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama.

KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD (6.7/10)

If you only have a few hours to concentrate on one of the best kingdom themed movies, grab your popcorns and give King Arthur: Legend of the Sword a chance. Get to learn about the moving life of Arthur (Charlie Hunnam), who, after his father’s death, is robbed of his birthright. He spends his younger years in the city’s alleys without the slightest clue of the great things that await him. Relatable?

Arthur’s life changes the moment he removes the sword from the stone. He has no option but to accept his legacy and the role of saving his people. A lot of critics have described this film as excellent, and among the most celebrated medieval kingdom movies to be created in 2017. Besides, Hunnam’s acting skills are impressive, and who can resist his sexy Geordie accent?

These four are just some of the most popular quality medieval classic movies that you can find today. Of course, there are others, and you should take the time to explore them as well. There is always something addictive about excellent kingdom movies. Once you start watching them, there is no going back! If you find a character you like more, don’t hesitate to add them to your list of favorite actors or actresses.
